Mental health is a broad term that encompasses an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being of a person from childhood to adulthood (Mentalhealth.gov, 2022). These factors all play a role in how a person handles stress and interacts with others, and poor mental health can have a negative impact on overall health (CDC, 2022a). Poor mental health can also lead to a mental illness, such as depression or anxiety, but poor mental health does not always indicate the presence of a mental illness. Mental illnesses caused by poor mental health include but are not limited to, anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia and many others. In the United States, one in every five adults will suffer from a mental health disorder each year, and one in every six children aged 6 to 15 will suffer from a mental health disorder each year (Nami.org, 2022a). In 2019, one in every three high school students in the United States reported feeling sad or hopeless a 40% increase from those who reported in 2009 (CDC, 2022b).
